Did you know that you can directly impact your community by becoming a volunteer partner with Catholic Charities!
A volunteer experience is a unique and fulfilling opportunity to participate in paving a road toward empowerment for the individuals and families we serve. Your time as a volunteer will make an impact for those in need throughout Northwest Indiana and will help enable them to thrive!
As Northwest Indiana begins re-opening, volunteers are needed to assist Catholic Charities in the areas below.
Catholic Charities is looking for a qualified volunteer child caregiver for our Women’s Care Center program in Hammond. A volunteer child caregiver is needed every Thursday afternoon from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., to care for the basic needs of children, including dressing, feeding, and supervising play and nap time while parents attend our parenting classes.
For some parents, this timeframe may be their only quiet time and we would like to provide a calm, non-stress environment for them without interruptions from their children. If you are interested helping us provide a safe environment for children while their parents attend our parenting classes, please call Stefanie at our Hammond office Women’s Care Center program line at (219) 554-1774 and ask about this volunteer child caregiver opportunity.
Our Food Pantry program relies on volunteers to help us provide food to families that are struggling to keep food on their tables due to the escalating cost of basic food items. Our Food Pantry program offers a number of volunteer opportunities to help sort, inspect, and pack food at our East Chicago office for the Food Pantry Distribution Center, Mobile Food Pantry, and Homebound Food Pantry Deliveries. If you are ready to make an impact, please call Liz Acevedo directly at (219) 397-5803 Ext. (205) or email Liz at eacevedo@catholic-charities.org.
We have ongoing volunteer opportunities especially for retired individuals who want to help out with minor repairs and maintenance for the four Catholic Charities locations (two in Gary, East Chicago, and Hammond). The need may be a simple repair, replacement, painting, maintenance, a small plumbing (e.g., minor leak repair), or an electrical (e.g., circuit breaker reset) task. Jobs are scheduled on an as-needed basis and there is usually no required time commitment. If you would like to volunteer your time and talent as a Handyman for Catholic Charities, please contact Joanne Pivarnik at jpivarnik@catholic-charities.org.
Administrative Assistant Volunteer duties range from tasks such as answering phones to assisting with general office duties, including filing, correspondence, and data entry. Knowledge of Microsoft Office a must, bilingual skills in English-Spanish a plus. If you would like to volunteer your time and talent as an Administrative Assistant for Catholic Charities, please contact Joanne Pivarnik at jpivarnik@catholic-charities.org.
Special Event Day Volunteers assist on the event day with set-up, greeting attendees, registration, crowd flow management, guest assistance, and clean up. Special Event Volunteers work under the direction of staff, various members of the event committee, or other volunteers, who will provide task-specific training. Special Event Day Volunteers will typically be asked to commit at least 3-6 hours depending on the event and the number of volunteers working the event. Volunteers may also choose to be involved in an event planning committee. Participation on an event planning committee typically requires larger time commitments over several months. If you would like to be a Special Event Day Volunteer, or you would like additional information, please send an email to development@catholic-charities.org.

Each year during the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays, Catholic Charities helps provide a warm and joyous holiday experience for those in need by providing gifts to children and youth, as well as holiday food to families that simply cannot afford it. This Holiday program begins on October 1st and ends on December 18th. You can help make a difference by volunteering your time and talent as you connect with parishes to collect gifts, organize gift request applications, data entry, organizing gifts by age group, wrapping gifts, preparing lists for donors, contacting families for pick up information, and helping with the distribution of food and gifts on various days during the holiday season. Holiday Program Volunteers will typically be asked to commit at least 3-6 hours per week during October 1st and December 18th timeframe. If you are interested in this wonderful opportunity to spread joy and cheer to the less fortunate during the holidays, please send an email to Joanne Pivarnik at jpivarnik@catholic-charities.org.
