Ramp Project
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of LaPorte County has received a grant to assist with their Ramp Building activities in LaPorte and Starke Counties.
To date this group of Twenty five RSVP and twenty three community volunteers have donated 8,633 hours to this project. The project’s activities have helped over 200 local residents remain safely in their homes and saved them from becoming institutionalized due to their handicap or age.
Housing Counseling/Education
Another Campaign for Human Development Grant was received by Catholic Charities to promote the education of individuals and families with housing difficulties. Counseling/education helps anyone having trouble meeting mortgage payments, falling behind in rent, fearing eviction or facing foreclosure. Individual and small group sessions are provided by a state certified HUD approved counselor.

Catholic Charities’ “Eating Healthy East Chicago” program was awarded a $25,000 grant at the Catholic Charities USA Leadership Summit held April 22 in Cleveland. This program, aimed at reducing poverty, serves as a model for other Catholic Charities agencies throughout the United States. In cooperation with Purdue University’s Cooperative Extension Service and a grant from the Foundations of East Chicago, “Eating Healthy East Chicago” was started five years ago by Emergency Services Director, Sister Barbara Sable. Nutrition education to families that depend on food pantries for a regular portion of their diet is provided at the East Chicago office. The program includes information on reading labels, child obesity and diabetes, and provides recipes and on site cooking instructions. Contact the East Chicago office for a schedule of classes at 397-5803.
